Winning table for 2003 "Brass Band Festival Theme"

Here's a little background on this winning crew as written by Mary Ellen Alexander:

Our family was quite proud that we won an award on our first try, especially since we nearly packed up and went back to a motel to eat our soggy chicken. But, we realized we were already as wet as we could be and voted to stay. We thought winning the "Brass Band Festival Theme" award reflecting the spirit of the festival was a fitting reward. My 87 year-old father had just praised his "children" for overcoming such obstacles as the weather and a broken down car to stay together and enjoy the evening.

William "Dutch" Schultz retired from the US Army bands after 30 years of service. He and his wife have traveled from their home in Hampton, VA, several times to attend the GABBF and he was eager to share the experience with his family. Our father from Sidney, OH, was able to join him in 2002. This year the "sisters" were also able to join them so we entitled our group the "Schultz Family Band Reunion". Carol Himebaugh traveled from Holland, MI. Jane Gehalo traveled from Telephone, TX. And, Mary Ellen Alexander traveled from Piqua, OH.

"Decorations consisted of instruments Dutch has collected over the years. A sousaphone bell contained a silk flower arrangement. A baritone chilled our sparkling grape juice. An alto horn held our napkins. And our father's trombone helped hold our sign. My husband, Ken Alexander contributed his whistle from his days as a high school drum major and his cornet that he played in school. All of us were in band at some point."
