U.S. Marine Band Brass Quintet

Doug Burian, a 1995 Centre College, and trumpet player for the group says that the "President's Own" U.S. Marine Band Brass Quintet formed to play for the festival. Other members are: John Abbracciamento, also on trumpet; Amy Horn on French horn; Brent Phillips on trombone; and John Cradler on tuba. Expect to hear a lot of patriotic music with almost all of the arrangements geared specifically for the Marine band. They will play marches from around the world.
"People are really used to hearing the traditional marches. We'll be doing those too, but we'll be featuring some lesser-heard marches from around the world."
During the festival, the Marine Band will team up with Millennium Brass. The quintet also will give a short program Friday as part of the band history conference. The theme is the Marine band at important historical events. "We'll look at the band's 200-year history and play music that was heard at important events and music that represents that era." For instance, the first time "Hail to the Chief" was played was at the opening of the C&O canal. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal linked Washington, D.C. to Maryland. The Marine band also played at the Gettysburg Address and the Congressional Prayer Vigil after 9-11. A trip to the festival won't be that unusual for Burian, who has been to all but one. He's had a lot to celebrate lately as his wife, Medessa Sexton Burian, a 1996 Centre graduate, recently earned her master's degree in public health from the University of Maryland -- College Park.
