Symphonia

They're bringing in the big guns, er, brass, in Symphonia, a large, professional tuba/euphonium ensemble.

The members call themselves ``a supersonic ensemble in the alternate clef'' and they certainly comprise an unusual and unique ensemble. The finest tuba and euphonium players in the country call themselves Symphonia.

Symphonia is the conception of Scott Watson and Winston Morris, who in 1993 decided the music-loving public needed a quality tuba/euphonium ensemble. The reality happened on April 1, 1995, when Symphonia played its first concert in Tucson, Ariz.

The group's repertoire includes original works, transcriptions and jazz. It has performed at a variety of venues, including the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference, the International Brass Congress, the Arizona Low Brass Symposium and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. They will play at an international conference in Italy this year.

Symphonia released its first recording with Mark Records, this year. The music on the compact disc derives from a number of different inspirations, including new works composed especially for Symphonia, special transcriptions, and some new jazz pieces for this tuba/euphonium ``Big Band.''
