Three groups of professional musicians plan a "Brass Spectacular" Saturday night at the Great American Brass Band Festival.

Millennium Brass, Boston Brass and Rhythm and Brass will band together about 9 p.m. to play music by Giovanni Gabrieli, a 15th Century composer and organist, and classic big band music.

"The three groups know each other well, and we thought it would be a great thing to get together," said Vince DiMartino, a trumpeter with Millennium Brass.

Gabrieli created music that called for three choirs in lofts at St. Mark's Church in Venice, Italy.

DiMartino calls Gabrieli's music an early stereo-type music since it was played in different sections of the church and the sounds come together.

The three bands will play music in separate groups, then get together and perform as one big band.

Brass Spectacular also will play classic big band music.

"We will play it exactly as it was written, except it will be all brass," said DiMartino. "Rather than using a saxophone, we will play trumpets, horns and tubas."

DiMartino thinks the performance will be fantastic. It will bring together friends and professional musicians who teach at universities and colleges all over the country.

He said this will be a once in a lifetime performance for the group as well as the audience.

Rhythm and Brass has drums to go along with its brass instruments; Boston Brass, a new group, is one of the premier brass quintets in the county and plays jazz and classical.

DiMartino looks forward to a weekend of good music and good food.

"Music is something to do between meals," he said. "We all love to eat. This will be a big weekend with good food and music."
