Centre Saxes

Being overheard at practices and their performances at recitals led to an invitation to perform at festival time for the Centre Saxes.

This group of Centre students includes Jonathan Finley of Louisville on soprano saxophone, John Ballert of Prospect on baritone saxophone, Daniel Lowhorn of Cookeville, Tenn., on alto saxophone and Joseph Glerum of Oswego, N.Y., on tenor.

In keeping with the theme of the festival, they'll be playing some ragtime but also will throw in some jazz. And their five performances will keep them hopping. They play Thursday at a dinner for elderhostel participants, Friday at the balloon races, Saturday at the Constitution Square with the Four Horsemen, in the parade and at Danville Office Equipment.

Despite their love of music, none of the members is majoring in music. Finley did transfer from the Eastman School of Music but now is majoring in economics. He still enjoys playing music.

``I don't know if it's a professional things for me but it's fun for me.''

They joked that they have a record coming out soon.

``It was recorded live at our last rehearsal,'' Ballert says.

David Anderson, a part-time music instructor at Centre, serves as adviser to the group.
