New Line Brass Band
If you want funky New Orleans parade music, it's got to be the New Line Brass Band, which is based in Fredericksburg, Va. Built in the tradition of Olympia, Treme, and the Dirty Dozen, the New Line Brass Band combines the talent and experience of the Dixie Power Trio with one of Washington and Baltimore's finest horn lines. The result is raw, fun and full of energy. Blending a mixture of traditional brass band standards, spirituals, zydeco, and original compositions, the group plays music with a loose vibe and a funky groove. Similar artists include Squirrel Nut Zippers. The New Line Brass Band is the result of a tragic laboratory experiment in 1998, when the Dixie Power Trio was genetically altered to include a whole lot more instruments. The lineup includes nationally acclaimed tuba player Andy Kochenour, drummer Ryan Diehl, guitarist Warren Boes, and trumpet player/accordionist Zachary Smith all members of the Dixie Power Trio. The horn line includes Dave Finnell on trumpet, Craig Considine and Dan Haverstock on trombone, with Frank Mitchell and Ron Diehl on saxophone. These talented musicians feel at ease playing on the street or on stage, serving up the music of the people the way it's supposed to be done New Orleans style. Join the parade! The group's compact discs include "Bad Spuds," which can be heard by looking up its Web site. Reviewer Doc Henley Smythe, a professional disc jockey, says, "... if, upon hearing the New Line Brass Band for the first time, you don't find the majority of your body moving in time to the music, you are either dead or you own the Barry Manilow boxed set." |
