Musikverein Herforst 1933 e.v.

Musikverein Herforst 1933 e.V., the band music club of Herforst, Germany, will return for a second time as the friendship between The Advocate Brass Band and it continues. The band performed at the 2000 festival through a friendship between the Advocate band conductor George Foreman and members of
the band. The Advocate Brass Band reciprocated with a European tour that included a big welcome by the Herforst community that summer.
The band was founded in 1933 by 11 musicians. Herforst is a farming community located in the Eifel region, a region of Germany not too far from Belgium and Luxembourg, and not associated with the Bavarian German culture.
The band made it through many hard times including the economic depression of the 1930s, when they traded some of their harvest for instruments, and World War II.
After the war, the band found itself performing for larger audiences and playing more entertaining music, such as pop tunes of the era. Because of this expansion of repertoire, others in the community were attracted to joining the group, which very soon became a cultural asset of the Herforst community.
By the beginning of the '60s, there were about 30 members in the band, most of whom had little formal training. In addition, many young students indicated an interest in becoming a member of the band, but there was little formal training available so many were turned away. German schools did not and still do not offer band as a class during the school day. But, since that time, efforts were made by members of the band to elevate the interest of younger members in order to increase the membership.
Today, there are about 50 active musicians and 61 inactive members who enthusiastically support the band.
The band engages in approximately 20 major concerts per year, and rehearses at least once per week in preparation for those major performances. Although many performances are held at local small-town wine fests and beer festivals, many major performances for large audiences have included concerts in Bonn, Trier, Berlin, Luxembourg and Heidelberg.
The Herforst Band is proud to be a member of the German/American Friendship League, and in the past has hosted concerts to celebrate that friendship and to improve the relationship between American and German citizens in the community, which is host to the Spangdahlem American Air Force Base.
