The Millennium Brass

Their jobs prevent members of The Millennium Brass from getting together too
often, but the group has big plans for this summer. The quintet will perform for the brass band festival and in August will be in Greece for 10 days.
Vince DiMartino, Centre College professor, says the idea for the trip came about after he and trombonist Scott Hartmann went there on their own last
summer and thought it would be a neat place for the quintet to go.
The group will give master classes to students. DiMartino also is a member of The Advocate Band and hopes to visit Greece with that group.
The idea for the group originated while the New Columbian Brass Band was on tour in Florida in 1998. In addition to DiMartino, members are: Hartman, who
played for many years with the Empire Brass quintet and teaches at Boston
University; Richard Illman, on trumpet, who is an associate professor of trumpet at Michigan State University; Lisa O. Bontrager, on horn, who is an
associate professor of music at Pennsylvania State University; and Marty Erickson, on tuba, who played with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C.
for 26 years and recently took a position teaching tuba at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.
Kentuckians also may know Illman because he taught for 12 years at Eastern Kentucky University and three years at the University of Kentucky.
The group will be working on music for a new CD.
"Since we all have jobs, we get together once or twice a year and do short tours and recordings," DiMartino says.
The group's first CD features the works of Holst, Bizet, Walond and Jack End. |
