Lydia DiMartino, Piccolo Soloist
Lydia DiMartino has been adjunct professor of flute and director of CentreFlutes at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, since 1989. She holds undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Kentucky. She has studied flute with such noted artists as Bonita Boyd of the Eastman School of Music, Kyril Magg of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Leone Buyse-Webster, former principal flute with the Boston Pops Orchestra, and Mindy Kaufmann, piccolist with the New York Philharmonic. Recently, she participated in the International Flute Seminar in Weggis, Switzerland, where she studied under James Galway.
DiMartino has devoted herself to mastering the stylistic and technical demands of the turn-of-the-century virtuoso piccolo solos which were featured on the hand concerts of that era. In keeping with the practice of the time, she performs these solos on a vintage D-flat piccolo, an instrument which has been completely replaced by the instrument in the key of C in modern ensembles.
