Antique writing instruments, oriental rugs, jewelry and outdoor sprinklers are just a few items up for grabs at the 2001 Danville Antique and Garden Show.

The Heart of Danville has been trying to expand its annual Antique and Garden Show for the past several years, and its efforts will pay off this year.

ÒThe show has grown and there is a lot more variety,Ó said Heart of Danville Director Julie Wagner.

Twenty dealers from all over the country will show off their wares. Dealers are from Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi and Connecticut.

Wagner said the show is the only major fund-raiser for Heart of Danville. The money it generates has helped to offset the costs of the Danville-Boyle County architectural book released last year, among other projects. The show was resurrected in 1999 to eliminate what Wagner calls Ònickel and dimeÓ fund-raising for the Heart of Danville.

The show is coordinated by antique dealer Charlie Miller of Chapel Hill, N.C., and will be held on all three floors of the Warehouse at Centre College as the Great American Brass Band Festival is under way. People looking to escape the heat of the festival also will be glad to know the Warehouse is air-conditioned.

A preview party 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday will feature Mike PerrosÕ jazz band with Perros, his mother Theresa, Bob Bryant and Bruce Martin, Wagner said. The $25 single, $50 couple price gives attendees the run of the show for the weekend. Reservations are recommended by calling 236-1909. Admission is $5 for the weekend and hours of 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

On Saturday from 2-4 p.m., Miller will perform appraisals of up to two items brought in to the Warehouse by the public.

Dealers include: Betsy Wilt and Richard Shelby of Danville, Dana Kelly Oriental Rugs, Thomas-Baldwin Antiques and Copper Garden of Lexington, Rita McNair of Foley, Ala., J.L. Barta of Talladega, Ala., Sue Robinnette of Louisville, Flo Deer of Little Rock, Ark., Fred and Avos Stickney of Fairhope, Ala, Chestnut Galleries of Spartanburg, S.C, Jo and Emily Dearman of Montgomery, Ala., Clinton Weil of St. Peters, Mo., Beverly Donan of Hanson, Patty Gibbs of Greenville, Miss., Robert Burrows of Lebanon, Conn., Bruce Shelton of Nashville, and Miller and Robert Walker of Atlanta.
