Brass Band Festival needs volunteers

Calling all volunteers for this weekend's Great American Brass Band Festival.

Due to the ever-growing festival - more bands, more customers, more everything - help is needed across the board.

"Though our dedicated volunteer base is steady as ever, the event is getting larger and more volunteers are needed to accommodate the growth," said Elaine Hammonds, executive director of the festival.

Hammonds requests additional help and strong backs for the picnic event. It requires setting up roughly 150 picnic tables.

"Help is always needed for that, especially with loading and unloading the trucks."

Another area that needs a hand is the Festival Market. Marketplace coordinator Gail Louis said volunteers for the marketplace would be appreciated.

"We ask people to sign up to basically sell items," Louis said of the duties performed by martketplace volunteers.

For those unfamiliar with the marketplace, memorabilia from the event, including posters, pins and T-shirts, are sold to festival patrons.

"This year, we'll provide sizes from infants on up," Louis said.

Market

A pre-festival market will be set up in the workforce area. Normally a two-week venture, the market has been shortened to just one week. Louis cites a number of factors, the most important being the difficulty in "trying to find a great space to hold it in." The coordinator also noted the lack of foot traffic in certain downtown areas.

The pre-festival market opened today at 103 S. Second St., next to Dr. Don Hamner's office. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. today through Thursday. The market will move Friday morning to the festival site on Walnut Street.

Hammonds also welcomes volunteers for non-specific duties.

"We have a variety of jobs that need to be completed to help the festival go off without a hitch. We need people to act as drivers to shuttle visitors to and from the Louisville and Lexington airports," said Hammonds.

Anyone willing to help with the festival should contact Hammonds at (859) 319-8426. For more information on helping at the marketplace, call Louis at (859) 238-9567 or (859) 236-1254.
