The Advocate Brass Band, which debuted in 1987, has about 35 members who call Danville home. George
Foreman, director, answered the questionnaire. Members of The Advocate Brass
Band include nationally known trumpet player Vince DiMartino, as well as
high school band directors, college students, physicians, engineers and
retirees.
What do you love about brass band music?
``Everything.''
Most shining moment?
``One of my most memorable moments was when a few of us about a year ago
put our band uniforms on and went out and played ``Happy Birthday'' to Mrs.
(Katherine) Bright when she turned 100. The reason is I think that when
I look out at the concerts and I always see Mrs. Bright and she's now 101,
and just the idea that what we're doing would give someone enough pleasure
that they would put it that high on their priority list.''
Most requested song?
``Stars and Stripes Forever.''
Travel?
The Advocate band did go to Washington, D.C., this year and went to Louisville
a few years ago, but usually performs in three spring concerts and three
fall concerts in Danville.
Food staple?
We usually have a picnic or a get-together at the end of season of the band.
It doesn't seem to make any difference what food it is, it all vanishes.
Most receptive audience?
At the band festival.
Funniest incident?
We were playing some cornet solo and Vince (DiMartino) changed the part
where he plays by himself and when he gets done I'm supposed to bring the
band back in and I didn't realize he had reached the end. He played the
end again and looks at me and I got tickled and he got tickled and he played
the end again and by that time, he's laughing and I'm laughing.
Little known fact?
The membership grows during festival time. People from all over show up
at the Thursday night practice. Sometimes these are fabulous professional
players.
